Collaborative Research on Prisons Drugs and Mental Health

On 11 December 2025, the Prisons, Drugs & Mental Health (PDMH) Project, funded by the Wellcome Trust, held its first workshop at the Anelia Hotel, Flic‑en‑Flac. The event brought together researchers from the Universities of Leicester, Guyana, and Mauritius, alongside more than 30 officers from the Mauritius Prison Service (MPS) to explore the historical and contemporary challenges shaping prison life in Mauritius. The workshop introduced the aims of the PDMH project, an interdisciplinary global study examining the relationship between prisons, drug use, and mental health, and created a platform for prison officers to share first‑hand experiences about working conditions, stress, security, and well‑being.
